The Reason Why

These pictures show the reason why...

Why what you ask.

Why I am heading back to the US yet again. Thanks to the lovely driver of the Dole truck, who chose to drive at night with no lights on, we now have a nice sized debt. I so dont want to go, but we have a debt that has to be paid, and no real way to get it paid off. So I am heading back to work for a bit so that we can get it taken care of.

Oh the joys of being responsible, LOL
When I look at these pictures though, I have to give thanks to God for keeping my husband safe and alive.

Thanks to God is right! It's a miracle that he survived that crash.

But I don't understand how you and not Dole could be held responsible.

I forgot to mention that El Jefe was hit by a driver who ran a stop sign. His foot was broken and our car was totaled. The traffic court judge/magistrate/whatever held the other driver responsible, but he ran away to the US instead of compensating us -- so I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Dole wasn't held responsible for their driver and/or badly maintained vehicles.

LG - I wasnt here in Honduras when they went to court or whatever you want to call it. That happened two days before I was able to make itback. My father in law went in place of my husband because he was not able to move. I think it had something to do with me being his wife, and by that I mean being American, and they saw dollar signs. I say that because in the newpaper articles about the accident they talked about him being married to a rich American, and how she has so much money. Well I would like to meet that wife, because maybe she would give me some money, LOL.

Plus he ulled out in front of the trailer - he was crossing from one side of the road to another - and the trailer ran into him. So it would be his fault. It doesnt matter that the trailer was driving with no lights on, and that there are no street lights or any other type of lights there to see the trailer either. So he was found at fault, we had to pay for the trailer, and all the lost bananas that was in the trailer as well. All I can say is, we live in Honduras

Lynette - thank you

Oh, jeesh! I'm so sorry. It's so unfair, but like you say, this is Honduras.

Our car was hit FIVE times! Three times by taxi drivers, this last time by a regular driver, and once by an attorney. The attorney paid us L.1,000 (about US $53) and wrote a document promising to pay the rest (I think it was about L.15,000). Needless to say, we never got another centavo from him or any of the other drivers.

In this last case, the judge gave the guy 2 weeks to either turn over some property he has in Olancho or come up with the cash which was a very reasonable amount - much less than it would cost to replace the car with an equivalent.

But I can only be grateful that we weren't injured like your husband that our car lasted as long as it did.

It is a blessing that your husband is ok. I am married to a Honduran and we live in the states and I have gotten the same reaction from some of his family memebers about money also. I wish it were true. I have found that when they visit and see reality here and they see that we are not living like they see on the tele, magazines, and what they are hearing people say then some of them understand. others on the other hand you can not tell them any different.I have visited Honduras a couple of times and we have had near misses on the roadways also, But thanks to God your husband is ok

It is such a miracle that your husband is alive! The money part makes me laugh, if you were that rich wouldn't you have gotten a lawyer to handle this for you, or given someone a big fat soborno? That is so silly! Sorry to hear that you'll have to go work for awhile to pay this off.

WOW!
He is Really lucky to be alive! Is your husband doing okay?
I am really sorry to hear that just when you get back and in the swing of things again you have to come back and work and be apart. Hopefully all will go well. You are a very strong person to be able to do all that you do for your family!

Hi Jennifer, I am so glad your husband is ok. I would like to e-mail you, but everytime I try to it won't let me. Is there any way I can get your e-mail address? We have a lot in common and I would like to talk to you privately to get more on your experience. Thanks!

Jenn, I am so sorry about all this. How difficult it must be for you to leave your children & come here to work again. I'm sure they miss you very much already. Do you get to talk to them much?
